Your Little Skater’s First Time at Skatin Station 2

If you’re a Canton parent with a toddler or preschooler who has been bouncing off the walls since the first snowfall, you already know the struggle: Michigan winters are long, and little ones have a lot of energy. A roller rink is one of the easiest ways to burn it off, and a child’s very first time on skates is something you’ll both remember. Here’s how to make that first visit at Skatin Station 2 a happy one, for the kids and the grown-ups.

1. Start with Rollers & Strollers

Our Rollers & Strollers session is made for skaters ages 7 and under. It runs Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM and costs $10. It’s a kid-sized way to start, and you’ll be skating alongside other families who are learning too.

Other Good Sessions for Little Skaters:

  • Saturday Open Skate: 1:00 to 6:00 PM, $12
  • Friday Night Family Skate: 7:00 to 10:00 PM, $14. Guests under 18 must have skates on to be in the building, so little ones come in on wheels.
  • Week Night Open Skate: Wednesdays, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, $10

2. Is My Child Ready?

There’s no magic age. Some kids are ready to try at four, some at six, and some when a cousin’s birthday party gets them curious. If you’re not sure, call us at (734) 459-6400 and we’ll talk it through.

Signs They’re Ready:

  • They walk steadily on their own.
  • They’re excited about trying skates (or at least curious).
  • They can follow simple directions like “hold the rail” and “bend your knees.”

3. Get the Right Fit

Rental skates (roller skates, rollerblades or speed skates) are $5. Little feet grow fast, so let us help you find a size that holds the heel and ankle snugly without pinching. If your child has never skated before, a Skate Mate ($5, limited supply) can give extra balance support while they find their feet.

Wrist guards, knee pads and a helmet are smart for new skaters. Little skaters spend a lot of time close to the floor, so bring yours if you have them.

4. Prep Before You Go

  • Eat first. No outside food or drinks may be brought into the building, so plan a snack or lunch beforehand.
  • Dress for comfort. Stretchy pants, a long-sleeve layer and socks that fit well inside small skates.
  • Use the restroom before you lace up. It’s a lot easier than getting skates on twice.
  • Plan a short visit. Thirty to sixty minutes is plenty for a first time. A tired kid is a cranky kid.
  • Get there a little early so nobody feels rushed at the skate counter.

5. Make It Fun, Not Scary

Yes, there will be wobbles, and probably a few happy tumbles. A little patience goes a long way.

  • Let them explore. Sit on the bench, watch the other skaters and get comfortable before stepping onto the floor.
  • Hold hands, then let go. Start with a steady hand, then try a few steps by the wall on their own.
  • Celebrate small wins. Standing up. Marching in place. Rolling one whole glide.
  • Teach getting up. Show your child how to roll to their knees and stand one foot at a time. It makes falling a lot less scary.
  • Take breaks. Water breaks and bench breaks count as part of the fun.
  • Skate with them. Kids love seeing a grown-up give it a try, wobbles and all.

6. What Skating Gives Little Ones

Beyond a tired, happy kid, skating helps young children build skills they’ll use everywhere.

What Little Skaters Gain:

  • Balance and coordination: Standing and moving on wheels trains the whole body to work together.
  • Confidence: Every new glide is a win they earned on their own.
  • Active play: A fun way to move, whatever the weather is doing outside.
  • Time with you: Shared laughs and a memory you’ll both keep.

A Few Common Worries

“My child is nervous.” That’s completely normal. Let them watch from the bench first, and take as long as they need before stepping onto the floor.

“What if they fall?” They will, and they’ll get right back up. Practicing how to get up safely is the very first thing we teach in our beginner lessons.

“I’m not sure they’re old enough.” Give us a call at (734) 459-6400. We’re happy to talk it through.

Ready to Roll?

If your child catches the skating bug, our 5-week beginner lessons meet on Saturdays from 10:00 to 10:30 AM, right before Rollers & Strollers starts at 10:30. Lessons cost $60. Thinking about a birthday? Take a look at our party options, or read our complete guide to skating in Canton.
