Skaters at the indoor rink at Skatin Station 2 in Canton, Michigan

Your First Night on Skates Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

Every skater you see gliding around the rink once had wobbly ankles and a death grip on the wall. That’s exactly who our beginner lessons are built for. At Skatin Station 2 in Canton, we start with the basics, go at a patient pace, and celebrate every small win, whether it’s your first unassisted lap or your first time standing back up after a tumble.

If you’re not sure your child is ready, or you’re wondering whether it’s too late to start yourself, give us a call at (734) 459-6400. We’re happy to talk it through.

What You’ll Learn in Level 1 (Introductory)

Our beginner class focuses on the skills that make everything else possible:

  • Getting up safely from the floor (first, because everyone falls)
  • Balancing on one foot
  • Marching in place, then while walking, then while rolling a short distance
  • The cannonball and the teapot, two low, balanced positions
  • Starting and stopping
  • Basic forward skating

Yes, you’ll probably fall once or twice. Everybody does. The difference is that you’ll know how to get right back up.

What Comes Next

Once you’re comfortable, there’s more to explore. Our levels build step by step:

  • Level 2, Novice: Forward and backward skating, balancing in more positions, the kangaroo hop and the shoot the duck, and pushing off from the T position.
  • Level 3, Intermediate: Forward edges, backward scissors for momentum, backward stopping, and turning from backward to forward and back again. Level 3 meets Tuesdays from 5:00 to 5:30 PM.
  • Level 4, Advanced: Ready to take it further? Ask us about what’s next when you’re there.

Speed Skating Lessons

Feel the need for speed? Our five-week speed skating session meets Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:00 PM and costs $60. Speed skates are available to rent for $5.

Tips for Your First Class

  • Dress to move. Comfortable clothes and socks that fit well inside rental skates are all you need.
  • Arrive a few minutes early so you can get your skates on and fitted without rushing.
  • Practice between classes. Wednesday’s Week Night Open Skate (6:00 to 8:00 PM, $10) is a great place to put in laps.
  • Make a morning of it. The Saturday lesson wraps up at 10:30 AM, right when Rollers & Strollers (ages 7 and under, $10) begins at 10:30 AM, a natural follow-up for little skaters.
  • Bring the grown-ups. Skating is a great way to learn together, and Sunday Adult Night (18 and older) gives grown-up skaters a night of their own.

A Few Common Worries

“I’m worried I’ll fall.” You might. We teach you how to fall safely and how to get back up, and that’s the first thing we cover.

“I’m the only adult learning.” You’re not. New skaters of every age walk through our doors, and every one of them started exactly where you are.

“I don’t have skates.” No problem. Rentals are $5, and our staff can help you find the right fit.
