Your First Visit to Skatin Station 2, Step by Step

Lacing up for the first time can feel a little like jumping into a cold lake: you know it’s going to be fun, you’re just working up to it. If you’re coming to Skatin Station 2 at 8611 Ronda Dr. in Canton, this is your plain-English guide to the first visit. No experience necessary. We’ll help you get rolling.

Pick a Session That Fits

Every skate night has its own feel, and all of them welcome first-timers. A few good places to start:

  • Week Night Open Skate: Wednesdays, 6:00 to 8:00 PM, $10. A relaxed weeknight outing.
  • Saturday Open Skate: 1:00 to 6:00 PM, $12. Plenty of daylight and plenty of company.
  • Friday Night Family Skate: 7:00 to 10:00 PM, $14. Great for the whole family. Guests under 18 must have skates on to be in the building.
  • Rollers & Strollers: Saturdays, 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, $10, for skaters ages 7 and under.
  • Adult Night Skate (18 and older): Sundays, 8:00 to 11:00 PM, $12.

Schedules and prices can change, so check the Hours and Pricing page before you head out.

What to Wear

Comfort wins. Think of what you’d wear to a workout or a long walk:

  • Stretchy pants or jeans you can bend in. You’ll be bending your knees a lot.
  • Socks that fit well. They sit inside your skates all night, so skip the super-thick ones and anything that bunches up.
  • Layers. The rink is indoors, so you’ll warm up as you skate. Michigan weather has other plans on the drive, so bring a jacket for the car.
  • A dry pair of socks if it’s slushy out. Wet feet and rental skates don’t mix.
  • Your hair tied back if it’s long, so it stays out of your face.

What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)

  • Skates: You can rent roller skates, rollerblades or speed skates for $5. If you want extra help with balance, ask about a Skate Mate ($5, limited supply).
  • Safety gear: Wrist guards, knee pads and a helmet are smart for new skaters. Bring yours if you have them.
  • Food and drinks: Please leave them at home. No outside food or drinks may be brought into the building. Cake and party supplies are only allowed when a party is booked.

When You Arrive

Plan to get there a little early. That gives you time to pick your skates, get a good fit and settle in without feeling rushed. A snug fit is what you want: your heel should stay put and your ankle should feel supported. If something feels off, tell us. We’d much rather swap a size than watch you wobble all night.

Your First Ten Minutes on Wheels

Everyone starts in the same place, and nobody’s judging. Here’s a simple way to ease in:

  • Stand up slowly holding the wall or rail. Keep your knees soft and your weight over the middle of your feet.
  • March in place. Lift one foot, then the other, before you try rolling.
  • Take small steps, then small glides. Keep your eyes up, not on your feet.
  • Stay near the wall until you feel steady.
  • Learn how to fall and get up. Yes, you’ll probably fall once or twice. Everybody does. Bend forward and keep your hands out of the way as you go down, then roll to your knees and get back up one foot at a time.

Want a Little Coaching?

Our 5-week beginner lessons are made for exactly this. Classes meet Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:00 PM or Saturdays from 10:00 to 10:30 AM, and cost $60. We start with getting up safely, balancing and marching, then build to starting, stopping and basic forward skating.
